Bone Density

BMD

Bone Density Scanning, also known as Dual-Energy X-Ray Absorptiometry (DEXA) or Bone Densitometry

Bone Density Scanning, also known as Dual-Energy X-Ray Absorptiometry (DEXA) or Bone Densitometry, is a safe low dose X-ray technique used to produce images of the bones. It is most commonly performed on the lumbar spine and hips but sometimes also includes the distal forearm. Our bone density tests provide valuable insights into bone strength, enabling early detection and prevention of osteoporosis and related conditions.

Osteoporosis is a disorder in which the density and quality of the bones are decreased. A reduction in bone mass and strength makes the bones brittle & fragile, thereby fracturing easily. Osteoporosis leads to weakness of the bones and increased risk of fracture of bones especially of the spine, hips and forearms. It is called the ‘silent disease’ as it does not produce symptoms until a fracture occurs after a minor accident or fall. Worldwide osteoporosis affects 1 in 3 women and 1 in 5 men over the age of 50 years. Individuals with risk factors are more likely to develop osteoporosis.

Why might a Bone Density test be recommended?

The risk factors include:

  • Advancing age
  • Female gender
  • White or Asian ethnicity
  • Family history of osteoporosis
  • Low calcium / vitamin D intake
  • Smoking and or excessive use of alcohol
  • Low Body Mass Index
  • High Caffeine intake
  • Sedentary lifestyle
  • Amenorrhoea
  • Hyperparathyroidism
  • Hyper-Corticism
  • Hyperthyroidism
  • Hypogonadism
  • Corticosteroid use
  • Anti-Convulsant use
  • Thyroxine use
  • Heparin use
  • Malabsorption syndromes
  • Anorexia Nervosa

Procedure

  • Eat normally on the day of your exam.
  • Avoid taking calcium supplements on the day of the exam.
  • Wear comfortable clothing without any zips, belts or buttons You will be given a clean gown to change into prior to your BMD scan.
  • Remove all metal objects from your pockets.

During your exam, you will lie on a Scanner machine as it takes readings of the density of the bones from the lower back and the hip area. The radiographer remains in the room with you throughout the scan. The test could take up to 30 minutes to complete.

You may dress and resume normal activity. The Radiological report of the Bone Mineral Density Scan will be sent to your doctor via e-mail on the day of the scan.

    • Mammogram

      Mammogram

Mammograms are a specific type of imaging that uses a low-dose x-ray system to examine breasts and is used to aid in the early detection and diagnosis of breast diseases in women.

    • Ultrasound

      Ultrasound

Ultrasound is a safe, non-invasive, painless & radiation free examination that uses high-frequency sound waves to create images of the body’s internal structures such as organs and blood vessels.
